Can Solar heat my radiators or contribute to my central heating system, or is it just for hot water?
Solar water does not provide DHW at hot enough tempatures to heat radiators. In hot weather or very bright days it could indeed provide hot water for a central heating system but the need for heating on these days is not necessary. However, underfloor heating can benefit from solar in that it uses low temperature heating over a wide area.
Which is better flat plate or tube type systems and why?
In Ireland, we have an abundance of diffuse radiation which is light which has arrived non directly i.e - it has passed through cloud, rain etc... Flat plate works better where direct light photons can penetrate the plate collector and heat the fluid therein.
What is the difference between a U type solar collector and a heat pipe system?
In a U type collector the working fluid circulates in pipes contained in the evacuated tube. In a heat pipe the copper pipe exchanges heat to the fluid carrying manifold. U type systems require more antifreeze solution to stop freezing, this reduces efficiency.
How long does it take to install a solar system?
Approximately 1 day, this can vary slightly if the install is awkward or quite large.
What guarantee do you offer on the tubes/plate and on the cylinder?
10 years on collectors and 25 years on cylinders. Electrical components and pumps carry a 2 year limited warranty.
I have a solid fuel stove and an oil fired central heating system. What type of solar cylinder do i need?
How often does a solar system need to be serviced?
Once every 2 years to allow for checking operation and topping up solar fluid.
Does the water I end up using for showers etc, pass through the solar collector?
No, the water cotained in the solar circuit is used to transfer heat only from the coil. This working fluid is a poisionous water/glycol mix and does not come into contact with sanitary hot water.
What stops the whole system freezing in the depths of winter?
A Glycol antifreeze solution allows for temperatures to drop to -20°c without freezing.
Solar only works on sunny summer days, is this true?
An evacuated tube uses diffuse light which is indirect radiation to turn light energy to heat energy. As long as there is daylight available, the solar collector is operational.
How is the panel attached to the roof?
Resolutions use a specialised solar bolt which screws directly into the roof trusses. This is a simple and safe method of attaching collectors and avoids unnecessary cost and disruption to the household.
Are the panels easily broken?
No, Panels are robust and will withstand most light impacts. They are even tested to a special heavy hailstone standard. Solar tubes if ever broken tend to be broken before they are mounted to the roof.
